On Friday, My Morning Jacket kicked-off the fourth edition of their warm-weather destination event One Big Holiday, which this year moved from Mexico to the Caribbean to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The multi-day getaway, which is produced by Cloud 9 Adventures and Bowery Presents, features three headlining performances from the host band as well as sets from the likes of Toots & The Maytals, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Nathanial Rateliff & The Night Sweats and more. Last night the Louisville-based band had something special in store as delivered a two-set affair sandwiched between an opening set from Broken Social Scene and a late-night appearance from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

For their first live show of 2018, which they previously revealed won’t include any U.S. dates, MMJ surprised fans by performing their first two full-length albums in their entirety. The opening portion of the night saw The Jacket tackle their 1999 debut release The Tennessee Fire, except for the record’s closing instrumental track. My Morning Jacket last performed the record in full back in 2010 when the band played a string of full-album shows at New York City’s Terminal 5. The 16-track album features MMJ’s original four-piece line-up of which lead singer Jim James is the only one that remains and at this point in their career is made up of songs that are all essentially considered rarities.

While songs like “Heartbreakin’ Man,” “Nashville To Kentucky,” “Picture Of You,” “Evelyn Is Not Real” and “War Begun” have remained in their setlists they have mostly been trotted out for one-off performances since they were in heavier rotation during the band’s early days. The biggest bust out from the lo-fi psychedelic-tinged release came in the form of “By My Car,” which hadn’t been played since October of 2010, at the aforementioned show at T5.

My Morning Jacket’s second frame of the night saw them offer up 2001’s At Dawn. The band worked its way through the record’s 13 songs delivering fan-favorites like “The Way He Sings,” “Bermuda Highway,” “Xmas Curtain” and “Phone Went West.” Rarities included the album’s title track, which was played for just the second time since 2015, “Death Is The Easy Way” which has only see action four times since a trio of performances in 2005 and the third “Just Because I Do” in over a decade-plus span. It was a pair of cuts from the back half of their sophomore album that were the true bust outs as “If It Smashes Down” and “I Need It Most” were played coincidentally also for the first time since that same Octoberber 2010 run.

The 2018 installment of One Big Holiday continues today with an afternoon set from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, with the Nathanial Rateliff & The Night Sweats holding down the opening duties prior to My Morning Jacket’s headlining performance.
