Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Aron Magner & Members’ Children For All Night Wrong Set At Holidaze
Umphrey’s McGee treated attendees at the Holidaze destination event in Puerto Morelos, Mexico on Friday to a pair of performances. The sextet’s second set was an “All Night Wrong” cover-filled affair featuring selections voted on by festival-goers and guest spots from Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits and the children of UM members and crew.
The Chicago-based six-piece opened with “Maybe Someday” and “Half Delayed” off it’s not us, their first album of 2018. Next, UM strung together “Resolution” and “No Diablo.” A lengthy “Ringo” was followed by “Make It Right” and just the third “Women Wine & Song” of the year. Yesterday’s opening stanza concluded with a “Puppet String” featuring “Hajimemashite” within.
Umphrey’s kicked off their All Night Wrong performance with “Layla” by Derek & The Dominos, which was last played in March. 2018 now stands as the first year to feature two covers of “Layla” since 2011. The band only performed the song once each year between 2012 – 2017. Next up was the return of Nirvana’s “In Bloom” after more than two years. Magner then emerged for just the third ever cover of “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” by Hall & Oates and first since May 6, 2016. The second “Debra” (Beck) of the past five years followed.
The set rolled on with “Making Flippy Floppy” by Talking Heads and Men At Work’s “Down Under.” The latter was last played on January 26, 2017 and was just the sixth of the past decade. Drummer Kris Myers then handled lead vocals on Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher,” which had been shelved since March 10, 2017. Next, percussionist Andy Farag vacated his setup to front UM on the 2018 debut of Warren G & Nate Dogg’s “Regulate.” Members of the band and crew’s children rocked out on Farag’s percussion rig during the rare cover. Another huge surprise followed as the sextet took a tangent from “Regulate” into Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” before finishing the song. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” had previously been performed by UM just once on April 27, 2013. Aron Magner then helped Umphrey’s close out the memorable set with Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”
