My Morning Jacket One Big Holiday
January 26-January 30, 2014
Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya
Puerto Aventuras, Mexico

Cloud 9 Adventures in conjunction with Bowery Presents brought My Morning Jacket to Mexico to curate their very own adventure for themselves and their fans. Also joining My Morning Jacket at the Hard Rock was The Flaming Lips, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mariachi El Bronx, and Rob Garza.

More than a just series of shows, this all-inclusive experience combined the best of the vacation world with the best of rock and roll, My Morning Jacket style! Daytime activities around the pool, late night parties, and the birth of a One Big Family put the whole event over the top in a way that both fans and artists will never forget.

The first day
was filled with plenty of smiles, hugs, and handshakes as we checked into the Hard Rock and got settled into our surroundings. Those who got down to the Concert Courtyard early enough were treated to a very special and intimate soundcheck with My Morning Jacket, effectively kicking off the music for the week. Then after a few hours spent meeting our new neighbors, familiarizing ourselves with the resort, and getting a pre-show dinner in, it was time for MMJ’s first show. Circuital kicked things off and sent us all into a frenzy of joy, as we knew this was the beginning of something very special. This was no ordinary Jacket show as the guys were soon joined onstage by Bob Weir of Furthur/Grateful Dead. After ending their show with Mahgeetah, MMJ waved and walked off the stage with everyone full-well knowing they’d be back for more the next day!

Day 2 was our first full day at One Big Holiday, and we were in full vacation mode. The sun was shining as the pools and lagoons around the resort began to fill up with sunbathers and swimmers. The epicenter of the afternoon’s fun was unquestionably the Lip Sync Contest, judged by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. Shortly later after the sunset, we gathered back in the Courtyard for another evening of music, this time being kicked off by a set from Preservation Hall Jazz Band, including a few songs with Bob Weir. After a short intermission, My Morning Jacket then came onstage for their second show picking up right where they left off the night before with the energy and passion we’ve come to expect. The show included favorites like Off The Record and Phone Went West before the second part of the show was guests galore - with Weir and Preservation Hall joining the band all at once for a large section of music. After a show ending Gideon, we left the courtyard for the “Stairway to Heaven” where Rob Garza was waiting for us with some beats to keep the party going into the night.

Our third day included yet another afternoon filled with sunshine. The Positive Legacy Day of Service brought Jacket fans together with the local community, the Poker Tournament created some friendly competition in the Theater, and the Tequila Tasting activity gave us a taste of Mexico to help us get ready for the night’s music. The evening’s music on the third day began with Mariachi El Bronx, giving us a chance to see some Mexican Folk music performed with an American, rock twist to it. As it was MMJ’s night off, the Flaming Lips headlined the evening. With classics like She Don’t Use Jelly and Do You Realize?, as well as some great covers such as The Beatles’ I Want You (She’s So Heavy) and David Bowie’s Heroes, they sure did not disapoint. Following the Lips, we once again met back at the Stairway to Heaven for a dance party hosted by MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan and company.

The fourth and final day of One Big Holiday seemed to come so quickly, though we took it on with a full head of steam. The sun was shining yet again, allowing us to soak in every last minute of Mexico that we could. A poolside game of Rock & Roll Themed Bingo brought us together in the sun before we shuffled inside to bid on tons of MMJ memorabilia and other items in the Positive Legacy Auction. As the evening drew near, it was bittersweet to gather for the final shows, though there was no time to be sentimental with still so much music ahead. Preservation Hall Jazz Band started the evening with a set that was surely highlighted by a special guest appearance from Jim James. Before long, it was time for My Morning Jacket’s final show of One Big Holiday. The show was opened with Victory Dance, which was followed by numbers like I’m Amazed, Golden and a cover of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon. The second half of the show featured an all-out fiesta up on stage, as Preservation Hall Jazz Band came up and joined MMJ before Wayne Coyne joined the band as a guest vocalist on George Harrison’s Isn’t it a Pity?. The evening’s encore was a raucous version of One Big Holiday, a song that represents so much about what we experienced over the last 4 days.
